Avoid impeachment but hold accountable
Yoon's stance requested on term reduction amendment
The People Power Party's Council of Mayors of Provinces and Cities urged President Yoon Suk-yeol to step back to a secondary role and form a national unity cabinet centered on a responsible prime minister.
On the 6th, the council held an emergency meeting at the Press Center in Jung-gu, Seoul, and stated in a position paper, "President Yoon Suk-yeol should form an emergency national unity cabinet led by a responsible prime minister and step back to a secondary role," adding, "He must clearly announce the future political schedule, including a constitutional amendment to shorten the presidential term."
This position paper represents the official stance of the ruling party's metropolitan and provincial governors regarding President Yoon's emergency martial law situation. It follows the statement released on the 5th by five members of the National Assembly from the People Power Party, urging the president to apologize and pursue a constitutional amendment to shorten his term.
The council made it clear that while they demand an apology and accountability from President Yoon Suk-yeol, they oppose impeachment.
Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu, responded, "This is not about debating whether it is an impeachment issue or not, but about preventing an extreme situation for the future of the Republic of Korea," adding, "I believe the president should apologize and take responsibility because he wrongly declared martial law."
Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon also stated earlier on his social networking service (SNS), "Impeachment is not the only solution," and expressed, "I hope the president breaks his irresponsible silence and reveals his will to take full responsibility along with measures to resolve the situation."
The council declared, "From now on, we will fulfill the responsibilities of the ruling party," and added, "We will find a way to restore order and discipline and regain the pride of the people."
Attending the meeting were Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok, who serves as the chair, along with Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, Daejeon Mayor Lee Jang-woo, Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom, Sejong Mayor Choi Min-ho, Gangwon Governor Kim Jin-tae, Chungbuk Governor Kim Young-hwan, Chungnam Governor Kim Tae-heum, and Gyeongnam Governor Park Wan-su. Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon and Gyeongbuk Governor Lee Cheol-woo did not attend.
