Luxury Park and Trendy Commercial Area at Gyeongchun Line Gongneung Forest Trail Enhanced with Attractions
Old Retaining Wall Murals Renovated with Dancheong Reliefs
Lighting Ceremony and Dancheong Relief Mural Unveiling Held at 5 PM on the 11th
Nowon-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will create the 'Nowon Light Specialty Street' along the Gyeongchun Line Gongneung Forest Trail.
The Gyeongchun Line Gongneung Forest Trail became a popular spot with a unique landscape and atmosphere through a project to convert the abandoned railway, after the Gyeongchun Line was discontinued, into a park. Currently, small but distinctive shops are clustered charmingly, revitalizing the local commercial district. However, there was a lack of differentiated specialty spots, the nightscape was ordinary, and there were concerns about old murals that spoiled the aesthetics.
Accordingly, the district decided to create a 'Light Specialty Street' by installing emotional luminaria landscape lighting facilities. This is in the section of the Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail (from Mirage Sheep Shop to Mubong-ri Sundaeguk) where young people frequently visit and cafes and dessert shops are densely located. Along this approximately 300m section, various themed light sculpture works such as ▲Welcome Heart Balloon Arch ▲Sky Lanterns ▲Ballerina and Angel ▲Butterflies ▲Light Tunnel will be installed to provide new enjoyment for nighttime visitors.
The mural on the retaining wall about 111m long in front of Hyundai Sungwoo Apartment adjacent to the Light Specialty Street will also be renovated. The mural was painted as part of past resident autonomy activities, but it had become old and was criticized for not matching the changing atmosphere of the surrounding commercial district.
The district plans to repair the retaining wall, create a new mural, and install landscape lighting to connect it with the Light Specialty Street. The newly designed mural, created using the dancheong relief technique, will feature motifs such as trains symbolizing Nowon's nature and the old Gyeongchun Line railway, becoming an outdoor artwork reflecting the local characteristics.
The lighting ceremony for the Light Specialty Street and the unveiling ceremony of the dancheong relief mural will be held at 5 p.m. on the 11th.
Nearby merchants welcome the district’s landscape improvement project. This is thanks to the continuous collection of opinions during the creation process of the Light Specialty Street and murals, which helped gain sympathy for the project’s purpose.
In particular, the luminaria facility raised expectations by developing a specialized design through benchmarking excellent cases and analyzing the target environment.
District Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “For the Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail, which has already become a famous spot, to take a step further, quality content and landscape improvement are necessary,” adding, “We will continue to support so that it can offer a wonderful space and experience anytime, day or night, in all four seasons.”
