On the night of the 1st, Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon visited Garak Market in Songpa-gu, Seoul, to check the supply volume and prices of kimchi-making ingredients such as napa cabbage and radish, whose prices have recently surged.
Mayor Oh listened to explanations from officials regarding the price trends and outlook for napa cabbage, and from 11 p.m., he observed the napa cabbage auction and also heard opinions from distributors.
Mayor Oh said, "It is truly unfortunate to see the distributors worrying when prices rise and also suffering mentally when prices fall," and encouraged, "I would be grateful if everyone could help so that Seoul citizens can worry less about the prices of food on their dining tables."
He added, "Although napa cabbage prices are still about 20 to 30% higher than usual, I believe prices will recover to normal levels by the end of this month or early December," and emphasized, "We will continue to communicate and cooperate with production areas to do our best to maintain stable prices."
On the 2nd, Mayor Oh also posted on Facebook titled 'Livelihood is the essence of politics,' expressing concern that "Ahead of the kimchi-making season, prices of key items such as napa cabbage and radish are higher than last year, increasing the burden on small business owners and citizens," and "Especially with the heavy autumn rains causing significant damage to napa cabbage fields in Haenam, price volatility by item is increasing due to climate change."
