Target Launch in July 2026
On the 21st at 2 p.m., Lee Sang-min, Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Woo Dong-gi, Chairman of the Local Era Committee, Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu, and Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongsangbuk-do, signed a joint agreement for the integration of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do at the Government Seoul Office.
Since June 4, when the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the Local Era Committee, Daegu City, and Gyeongsangbuk-do agreed to officially promote the integration of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do, Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do have been conducting consultations to prepare integration plans.

Since September, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Local Era Committee have also participated in the consultation process to support Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do in reaching an agreement on the establishment of the integrated local government office building and other matters.
The joint agreement announced on this day contains the roles of the four institutions for promoting the integration of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do and seven agreed matters between Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do.
First, Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do agreed to continue promoting integration based on mutual respect and trust, while the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Local Era Committee pledged to strive for legislative procedures and administrative and financial support, and to actively transfer national affairs and finances.
Additionally, Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do agreed that even after integration, cities, counties, and autonomous districts will continue to perform their previous duties, actively promote balanced regional development including the northern region, and utilize the office buildings of Daegu City as well as those in Andong and Pohang cities of Gyeongsangbuk-do.
Going forward, Daegu City and Gyeongsangbuk-do plan to promptly prepare integration plans based on the joint agreement and propose them to the government. Subsequently, the government plans to form an inter-ministerial consultative body involving related ministries and prepare support measures for the integration of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do.
The integrated local government of Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do aims to launch in July 2026 following the enactment of a special law.
