This year, a deep-sea training vessel with a 68-year tradition has departed from Busan Port.
On the 28th, Pukyong National University (President Jang Youngsoo) held the "2024 Deep-Sea Onboard Training Departure Ceremony" at Yongho Bay Reclaimed Pier.
On this day, 127 people, including 92 students from the Department of Marine Production System Management, Department of Marine Industry Education, and Department of Mechanical System Engineering, as well as 35 crew members, boarded the state-of-the-art training ship Baekkyung-ho (Captain Ryu Kyungjin, 3,997 tons) and embarked on a 32-day deep-sea onboard training.

Pukyong National University's deep-sea onboard training began in 1957 when 48 students, including Kim Jaecheol, ventured to Keelung Port in Taiwan for the first time in Korea. Kim Jaecheol, then a senior in the Department of Fisheries at Busan Fisheries University, one of the predecessors of Pukyong National University, is now the Honorary Chairman of Dongwon Group.
This training, now in its 68th year, has laid the foundation for Korea's deep-sea industry and economy, and has established itself as a talent development program for the future high-tech marine and fisheries industries.
After the departure ceremony, Pukyong National University students will set sail from Busan and, until July 29, conduct training in the East Sea, South Sea, West Sea of Korea, as well as waters near Japan and Taiwan. They will gain hands-on experience in navigation, fishing operations, electronic communication operation, ship engine operation, and automatic control system operation, following the STCW international convention's curriculum for navigators and engineers.
They also plan to visit ports such as Hakodate in Japan and Keelung in Taiwan, visiting universities and institutions to build international networks.

President Jang encouraged, "I hope all trainees will carry this pride in your hearts and do your best not only to acquire knowledge in your major fields, but also to develop the qualities of leaders in the fisheries and marine industries."
