Jongno-gu (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) has installed 18 cigarette butt collection bins in the Gwancheol-dong area, where restaurants and shops are densely located, to improve the urban landscape and create a clean Jongno street.
The collection bins installed by Jongno-gu this time are small-sized and specially designed with an inlet that only allows cigarette butts to be disposed of. The cigarette butts collected in the bins at the shops are placed in transparent plastic bags and disposed of, and the district collects them more than once a day for processing.
Previously, applications for participation in the project were received from shops in areas where illegal dumping was frequent, and considering the effectiveness, plans to expand the installation in the future are also being reviewed.
Merchants actively participated, expecting effects such as reducing the indiscriminate disposal of cigarette butts on the streets and preventing sewage backflow caused by clogged rainwater drains during the rainy season.
Jongno-gu also plans to operate a separate cleanliness task force for the cigarette butt collection bins and take immediate action whenever related complaints arise.
A Jongno-gu official said, “Currently, a total of 52 cigarette butt collection bins are installed in Jongno,” adding, “While additional installation and management are important, mature civic awareness is essential to eradicate illegal dumping. We ask for your cooperation in creating a clean community.”
