BSI Recognized for Global-Level Business Performance and Maturity
Gimhae City in Gyeongnam announced on the 30th that it has obtained the international smart city standard ISO37106 certification.
According to the city, this is a remarkable achievement following the acquisition of the first domestic smart city certification in the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam region last September.
The international smart city certification is a prestigious certification system first introduced worldwide by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the smart city sector.
It is awarded by the British Standards Institution (BSI) to cities recognized for their smart city project performance and maturity at a global level.
The certification evaluates 22 items across 4 categories, and cities that achieve at least level 3 in all items based on the highest level 5 standard receive the British industrial standard mark (Smart City Kitemark).

During the certification review process, the city received high scores of level 4 (advanced) in 8 items including capability, smart city development and infrastructure, digital inclusion, and channel management, and the final review results showed that all 22 items were rated at least level 3 (mature).
Currently, 13 local governments in Korea, including Sejong City, have obtained the international certification ISO37106.
Five local governments, including Gimhae City, Daegu, Suwon, Gangneung, and Seocho District in Seoul, have acquired both domestic and international certifications.
Mayor Hong Tae-yong said, “This is the result of faithfully implementing the strategic tasks of the first smart city plan established in 2017 in cooperation with citizens,” adding, “It has become an opportunity to take a step forward as a global smart leading city by having our achievements and capabilities internationally verified.”
He continued, “We will devote our administrative capabilities to making Gimhae, a warm and happy city where dreams come true, an inclusive smart city where all citizens enjoy together without discrimination or disparity, and a future-oriented smart city where advanced industries are revitalized.”
