[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-eun] Amid allegations of plagiarism in singer Hong Jin-young's master's and doctoral theses, Chosun University has announced that it will investigate the facts of the case and prepare measures to strengthen research ethics.
On the 9th, Chosun University held a meeting regarding the plagiarism allegations against Hong Jin-young's theses and stated that it is currently verifying the facts and circumstances.
Since the establishment of the Chosun University Research Ethics Committee in 2011, Hong Jin-young passed the doctoral thesis examination the following year. In response, Chosun University said it will focus on preparing measures to strengthen research ethics and thoroughly examine the circumstances to reinforce a verification system that can eradicate plagiarism in master's and doctoral theses.
Earlier, when plagiarism allegations surfaced, Hong Jin-young stated on her social networking service (SNS), "The parts that passed without issue at the time are now judged by just a few percent, so no matter what I say, it can only be seen as an excuse, which is frustrating and upsetting," adding, "Everything is our fault, and I will return my master's and doctoral degrees."
In response, a Chosun University official said, "Although Hong Jin-young expressed her intention to return her master's and doctoral degrees, there is no system for returning degrees. We are reviewing existing cases from other universities," and added, "If there are any matters necessary during the investigation and review process related to this case, we will disclose them transparently."
In connection with this, it is reported that the civic group Judicial Examination Preparation Students' Association submitted a request for a full investigation into Hong Jin-young's master's and doctoral theses to the Ministry of Education on the 8th, indicating that the controversy surrounding this issue is likely to grow.
