Tuition Refund of 10% Per Student Expected... Worth Approximately 1.9 Billion KRW
Jeonbuk National University has become the first national university to refund a portion of tuition fees to students.
[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Jeonbuk National University has become the first national university to return a portion of tuition fees to students.
Jeonbuk National University announced on the 6th that it will provide a "COVID-19 Special Scholarship" to reduce the financial burden caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Although called a special scholarship, it is essentially a tuition refund as it returns part of the tuition fees. The scholarship amount is set at 10% of the paid tuition.
In the first semester of this year, the average tuition paid by Jeonbuk National University students was 1,960,000 KRW. Ten percent of this amount means each student will receive approximately 196,000 KRW as a scholarship refund.
However, not all students will receive 196,000 KRW; if the tuition paid is less than 1,960,000 KRW, they will receive 10% of the amount they paid. For example, if a student paid 1,000,000 KRW, they will be refunded 100,000 KRW.
If the tuition paid exceeds 1,960,000 KRW, the refund will be capped at 196,000 KRW, not 10% of the amount paid. So even if a student paid 3,000,000 KRW, they will receive only 196,000 KRW.
The recipients are students who paid tuition for the first semester of this year and are also registered for the second semester; students who have withdrawn or been expelled will not receive a refund.
Graduates in August will receive the refund directly, while students registered for the second semester will have the scholarship applied to their tuition bill.
Students taking a leave of absence in the second semester will receive the refund upon returning to school, and graduate students are excluded from the refund.
Jeonbuk National University estimates that approximately 1.9 billion KRW will be spent on this special scholarship.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education plans to announce specific support measures within this month for universities offering tuition refunds.
The government and ruling party have allocated a total of 100 billion KRW in the third supplementary budget for tuition refunds, with 76 billion KRW for four-year universities and 24 billion KRW for junior colleges.
