[Las Vegas (USA) = Asia Economy Reporter Park So-yeon] Han Jong-hee, President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business Division, expressed confidence in the technology and demand ahead of the launch of Micro Light Emitting Diode (LED) TVs.
On the 5th (local time), at a press conference held immediately after 'Samsung First Look 2020' at Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas, USA, President Han stated that Micro LED TVs "will be first released in markets such as the US, Europe, and Australia in the second half of the year."
At this event, Samsung Electronics showcased the full lineup of 'The Wall' with Micro LED applied in sizes of 75-inch, 88-inch, 93-inch, 110-inch, 150-inch, and 292-inch.
President Han said, "Micro LED is changing today and will continue to change tomorrow," adding, "Technological advancement is quite rapid."
However, he noted, "While B2B demand is increasing, B2C requires effort," and "Since it is still in the transition phase, it is difficult to predict demand."
Regarding last year's sales performance of Micro LED, he said, "Factory production capacity is fixed, and currently, it is not in the four-digit range," adding, "We plan to increase demand and reinforce production capacity to supply a large volume."
He also added, "I think people who have home theaters or cinemas might be eager to own Micro LED."
President Han mentioned the possibility of additional releases of small-sized products under 75 inches. He explained, "We are considering small monitors as well," and "The technology is still under development."
Regarding another key product, QLED TV, last year's sales volume was "remembered to be up to 5.4 million units," and he said, "We will increase 8K demand more this year and advance it faster than the path 4K took."
There was also a question about Samsung Electronics' new 8K TV that met 50% contrast modulation (CM). Previously, when LG Electronics criticized Samsung's 8K CM value, Samsung had rebutted that this standard was not absolute.
President Han said, "The CTA regulation was finalized in September, before our product was released," and "If new regulations come out, we can definitely meet them."
Regarding the 'real 8K' dispute raised by LG Electronics, he said, "If only the competitor has real 8K, what about the people who buy our products?" and "The product that is chosen more in the market is the good one."
When asked about the possibility of LG Electronics' main product, OLED TV, production, he firmly stated, "We do not have the facilities. We do not do it."
As for the reason for deciding the global launch of 'The Sero,' which was only released domestically, he explained, "(Last year) the operating system could only be used with Android smartphones, and (this year) iPhones are also supported."
Regarding Quantum Dot (QD) displays, in which Samsung Display is investing, he said, "QD is also a type of QLED," and predicted that there would be no cannibalization (where a new product eats into the market of an existing main product) with Micro LED.
