Dogs Retreat After Battery Explosion
Brand New Device, Only 20 Days Old
Victim Says, "The Mobile Phone Saved My Life"
In Brazil, a man dramatically survived an attack by two large dogs when the battery in his mobile phone exploded inside his pocket.
On February 28, local Brazilian media outlets such as G1 reported on a recent mobile phone explosion incident in the country. Early last week, Reinaldo Duarte de Almeida, an auto mechanic living in Cascavel, Paran?, Brazil, was attacked by two large dogs on his way to work. The dogs lunged at his neck, and as he tried to fend them off, they began biting his legs relentlessly.
During the struggle, one of the dogs bit the mobile phone in his pants pocket, causing the battery to explode from the impact. Startled by the sudden sound and heat of the explosion, the dogs stopped their attack and retreated, allowing Reinaldo to escape. It is explained that lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in smartphones, can undergo a 'thermal runaway' phenomenon when subjected to strong impact, pressure, internal damage, or overheating. In particular, if the internal separator of the battery is damaged by an external shock, a short circuit may occur, leading to rapid heating and potentially resulting in fire or explosion.
In an interview with local media, Reinaldo said, "The dog lunged at my neck, and when I tried to hit it away, it went down and bit my leg. At that moment, it bit the phone in my pocket, and the battery exploded. It was dangerous, but in the end, the mobile phone saved my life." The mobile phone in question was reportedly a new device purchased about 20 days earlier. He sustained burns on his leg and fingers, and received stitches-about eight-for the areas bitten by the dogs. He is currently reported to be in good health. The dog owner apologized and agreed to fully compensate for the medical expenses and the damage to the mobile phone, while Reinaldo decided not to file a formal complaint.
Meanwhile, there have been several previous reports of smartphone fires caused by overheating during charging or battery defects. The reason some airlines strictly restrict the use of portable batteries on board is also due to the fire risk. In particular, there have been frequent cases overseas where mobile phone batteries have exploded, causing burns to users or igniting in a pocket and setting pants on fire. There have also been instances where a battery caught fire belatedly after a strong external impact, such as a bicycle or motorcycle accident or a fall. On the other hand, cases like this, where an unexpected explosion ironically ends an attack, are rare. Locals have noted that this incident, which could have resulted in far more severe injury or loss of life, serves as a renewed reminder of the importance of mobile phone safety management.
