A boy in China has become a hot topic after promising his parents that he would jump rope as many times as his video receives likes, only for the number of likes to surpass 1.8 million.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong on February 22 (local time), the story of a boy in Jiangsu Province, known by the nickname "Tangdu," has been spreading rapidly through local social networking services (SNS).
Tangdu is 132 cm tall and weighs 45 kg, making him larger than the average for his age. According to China's National Health Commission, the average weight of a 7-year-old boy is reported to be around 19 to 26 kg.
During the winter vacation, the boy visited his parents in Linyi, Shandong Province and told his father that he had a school assignment requiring him to jump rope 100 times a day. His father promised to give Tangdu 10 yuan (about 2,100 won) for every 0.5 kg he lost. However, if Tangdu gained weight, he would have to pay his father 10 yuan for every 0.5 kg increase, and he agreed to this.
The next day, his father shared another video and asked his son if he wanted to jump according to the number of likes the video received. Tangdu agreed to this new form of motivation.
However, on February 10, the day after the video was released, the number of likes reached 1.8 million, drawing an explosive response. In a recently released video, the father joked, "I'm not sure if Tangdu still thinks of me as his father," and added, "For the sake of my son's health, I will continue to guide him to jump rope. I also hope he understands that promises must always be kept."
Chinese internet users commented, "I was feeling a bit down today, but when I saw that he has to jump rope a million times, I couldn't stop laughing," and "Internet users are really cruel."
