Damyang County in Jeollanam-do is launching a new "Humanities Literacy Class" that delivers essential everyday knowledge directly to adults who have missed out on learning opportunities.
On the 23rd, Damyang County announced that it is recruiting new students for the 2026 "Damyang Humanities Literacy Class," which is aimed at adults with low or no literacy skills.
This literacy class goes beyond simply learning to read and write. It is a village-visiting program that combines practical, day-to-day knowledge in areas such as finance, transportation, and kiosks with humanities and emotional activities. It will be operated year-round to enhance learners' ability to adapt to daily life and to widely promote the joy of learning.
The classes are divided into two formats depending on the number of learners. Type A is held twice a week for two hours per session at village halls or senior centers where four or more people gather. Type B is designed for small groups of one to three learners, with instructors visiting homes and other sites twice a week for one hour per session to provide intensive instruction.
The curriculum is built on basic literacy education such as Korean reading and writing, numerical calculation, and basic English, and includes practical digital education such as how to use buses, how to handle banking work, and how to use restaurant kiosks. In addition, a variety of humanities-based emotional education, including drawing and expressive activities, is also provided.
Recruitment for new classes will run for three weeks from this day until March 13. Villages or individuals with a secured learning space can apply by visiting their local eup or myeon Administrative Welfare Center, and final selection will be made after on-site verification.
Damyang County Mayor Jeong Cheolwon said, "We will continue to expand valuable learning opportunities for adult learners through village-centered, visiting literacy education," adding, "We will keep strengthening a solid foundation for lifelong learning in the region."
