Automatic Enrollment for Active-Duty Soldiers Registered in Gwangju
Coverage Up to 30 Million Won
Young people performing military service whose resident registration is in Gwangju are covered by an accident insurance plan without any separate application. This year, the Gwangju Metropolitan City Government has newly added coverage for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis, expanding the scope of protection to include not only physical accidents that may occur during military service but also psychological trauma.
On February 17, the Gwangju Metropolitan City Government announced that it will support the enrollment of young people in “Military Service Youth Accident Insurance” if they are serving in the military and have their resident registration in Gwangju.

The eligible beneficiaries are active-duty soldiers, full-time reservists, conscripted police officers, and conscripted firefighters under the Military Service Act. Those who are professional soldiers or social service agents, for whom separate insurance systems already exist, are excluded. Eligible individuals are automatically enrolled when they begin their military service without any separate application procedure, and the coverage is terminated when they are discharged or transfer their resident registration to another region.
The main coverage items are: death or aftereffects disability due to injury or illness (30 million won); hospitalization due to injury or illness (30,000 won per day); diagnosis of severe disability during military service (10 million won); diagnosis of fractures and burns (300,000 won); diagnosis of traumatic amputation (1 million won); consolation money for mental illness (1 million won); and surgery costs, including surgery on hands and toes (200,000 won each). Double compensation with other insurance policies is also possible.
Starting this year, the Gwangju Metropolitan City Government will additionally provide 1 million won for PTSD diagnosis to prepare for psychological trauma that may occur due to accidents or training processes during military service.
Insurance claims can be filed through Meritz Fire & Marine Insurance within three years from the date of the incident. For more detailed information, individuals can check the Gwangju Youth Integrated Platform or contact the Youth Policy Division of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Government.
Kwon Yunsook, policy chief of the Youth Policy Division, said, “We will continue to promote policies to improve livelihood stability and welfare so that young people can devote themselves to military service with peace of mind.”
