Norway's Laegreid Finishes Third in 20 km Individual Event
Breaks Down in Tears Confessing His Wrongdoing During TV Interview
"I Want to Share This Medal With Her"
It is an unexpected remark.
It is the confession of Sturla Holm Laegreid (28) of the Norwegian men's biathlon team. On the 10th (local time), at the Anterselva Biathlon Arena in Italy, he finished third in the men's 20 km individual biathlon at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics with a time of 52 minutes 19.8 seconds, following his national teammates Johan Olav Botn (51 minutes 31.5 seconds) and Eric Perrot of France (51 minutes 46.3 seconds). This is his second consecutive medal after winning gold in the 4×7.5 km relay at the 2022 Beijing Games.

Immediately after winning the bronze medal, instead of expressing joy over the medal, Laegreid suddenly confessed his wrongdoing in an interview with Norwegian broadcaster NRK. "I cheated on my girlfriend," he said. Fighting back tears, he continued, "Six months ago, I met the love of my life. She was the most beautiful and kind person in the world," and added, "Three months ago, I made the biggest mistake of my life. I cheated on her."
Laegreid said, "A week ago, I told her what I had done," and added, "Many people will now look at me differently, but in my eyes, there is only her." He concluded the interview by saying, "I do not know what I can gain by saying this now, but recently sport has been secondary. I want to share this medal with her."
