Work Time and Error Rate Expected to Decrease by 20%
Logistics Costs for SMEs and Operating Expenses Projected to Drop by Over 20%
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and Incheon Port Authority announced on the 9th that they will hold an opening ceremony for the "Incheon Port Smart Shared Logistics Center," built in the Aam Logistics Complex 2 in Songdo International City, Incheon, on the 10th, and begin full-scale operations.
According to the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, the Smart Shared Logistics Center, located in the hinterland of Incheon South Port, was constructed as a three-story above-ground building with a total floor area of 19,085 square meters, with a total project cost of 38.2 billion won. Of this amount, 10.9 billion won was funded by the central government.
The logistics center has implemented automated functions for cargo receiving, shipping, and storage by utilizing smart robots and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. Through an artificial intelligence (AI)-based big data analysis system, it can also perform real-time inventory management and forecast customer demand. As a result, compared with conventional logistics centers, work time and cargo handling error rates are expected to decrease by 10% to 20%, while productivity and space utilization are projected to improve by up to 30%. Operating costs are also expected to be reduced by more than 20%.
The model in which the government and public institutions directly build and supply logistics centers also helps lower entry barriers for small and medium-sized logistics companies, which face heavy burdens in terms of initial investment and financing. By allocating more than 50% of total handling volume to cargo from small and medium-sized enterprises, the center is also expected to help ease logistics cost burdens for small and medium importers and exporters.
Kim Hyejung, Director General for Shipping and Logistics at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "We expect the Smart Shared Logistics Center to establish itself as a key facility that revitalizes the local economy and marks a turning point for the smart logistics industry," adding, "We will actively support Incheon Port so that it can leap forward as a smart logistics hub with international competitiveness."
