President Lee Jae-myung commented on the KOSPI index surpassing 5,000 points on January 23, stating, "When Korean companies are properly valued, the wealth of all citizens increases."
President Lee made these remarks during a town hall meeting held in Ulsan that afternoon under the theme "Opening the Silk Road of Future Industries in Ulsan." He explained, "The National Pension Service holds Korean stocks, and with the rise in stock prices, its value increases by about 250 trillion won. Concerns such as the National Pension Service being depleted in a certain year, or fears that 'I paid into the pension but might die before receiving it,' have almost entirely disappeared." He added, "At the very least, most of the people here no longer need to worry about the depletion of the National Pension Service."
President Lee also remarked, "Some people ask what the rise in stock prices has to do with them, or even say, 'Why does it only fall for me? Why am I losing everything after investing in leveraged or inverse products?' That is simply how the world works," he said.
The achievement of the KOSPI 5,000 milestone was one of President Lee's campaign pledges, and on January 22, the index surpassed the 5,000 mark for the first time in history. After briefly retreating, the KOSPI index rebounded and recovered the 5,000 level early in the session on January 23.
