K-Marine Semiconductor Alliance Launches on January 19
First Step Toward Expanding the Application of Semiconductors to the Marine Industry
Busan Metropolitan City has launched a private sector alliance connecting the marine and semiconductor industries, known as the "Marine Semiconductor Alliance."
On January 19 at 3 p.m., Busan Metropolitan City (Mayor Park Hyungjoon) held the launch ceremony for the "K-Marine Semiconductor Alliance" at Signiel Busan in Haeundae District, officially announcing the start of a cooperative system to foster the marine semiconductor industry.
More than 150 participants attended the event, including Mayor Park Hyungjoon, National Assemblyman Chung Dongman, Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman Yang Jaesaeng, Busan Metropolitan Council Planning and Finance Committee Chairman Sung Changyong, and representatives from academia, industry, and research institutes in the semiconductor and shipbuilding sectors.
This launch ceremony was organized to establish a private sector-led cooperative system aimed at transforming Busan into a "next-generation global hub city for marine semiconductors" and to promote the internalization of core technologies by linking the shipbuilding, marine, and semiconductor industries.
On the afternoon of the 19th, the launch ceremony of the "K-Marine Semiconductor Alliance" is taking place at Signiel Busan in Haeundae District.
The city plans to operate the "K-Marine Semiconductor Alliance" in conjunction with national semiconductor policies and shipbuilding and marine industry strategies. In line with the government’s semiconductor industry development policy, the Southern Region Industrial Innovation Strategy, and the shipbuilding and marine digital transformation policy, Busan will pursue both the attraction of large-scale national projects and the expansion of private investment. To achieve this, the city will establish an innovation belt connecting the Gijang Power Semiconductor Specialized Complex, the Yeongdo Boost Belt, and the Haeundae Second Centum Urban Convergence Zone, and will foster a marine semiconductor industrial complex in stages, aiming to rank among the global top 30.
With the launch of this alliance, the private sector-led development of a next-generation marine semiconductor supply chain will also begin in earnest. Semiconductor companies will be responsible for designing and producing system and power semiconductors suitable for marine environments, while shipbuilding companies will serve as demand sources for domestically produced marine semiconductors and as testbeds for mass production verification. The city plans to provide policy and financial support, including attracting and supporting the National Growth Fund, offering investment attraction subsidies of up to 33 billion won, and providing tax benefits through designation as an Opportunity Development Zone.
Busan intends to develop the alliance into a practical cooperation platform through regular consultative bodies, joint project discovery, and expanded international cooperation. Through these efforts, the city aims to increase the added value of the marine industry, expand application areas for the semiconductor industry, and promote the advancement of the regional industrial structure and job creation. By expanding cooperation with promising domestic and international companies and research institutions, Busan also expects to contribute to the localization of semiconductor technology in the marine sector and the stabilization of the supply chain.
Mayor Park Hyungjoon emphasized, "Busan is serving as a key hub of the Southern Region Semiconductor Innovation Belt based on its public infrastructure for power semiconductors. The 'K-Marine Semiconductor Alliance' launched today marks the first step in expanding the application of the semiconductor industry into the marine sector and stands as a model case of public-private partnership. This will serve as an opportunity for Busan to emerge as a globally recognized hub for marine semiconductors."
