Pyeongchang County in Gangwon Province announced on January 19 that it has been finally selected for the "2026 Local Government Underground Cable Project" organized by Korea Electric Power Corporation, securing a total project budget of 2,932 million won for an 0.8 km section around Jinbu High School in Pyeongchang.
This project involves relocating utility poles and overhead power lines along the roadside underground, with the aim of improving the urban landscape and enhancing pedestrian safety. In particular, since the targeted area is near Jinbu High School, which sees frequent use by students and residents, the project is expected to significantly contribute to improving the learning environment and raising the quality of life for local residents.
Previously, in 2025, Pyeongchang County was also selected for the "Green New Deal Power Line Underground Support Project" and is currently carrying out underground cabling work around Jinbu Market in Pyeongchang. By organizing the cluttered power lines and utility poles near the traditional market, the county is creating a more pleasant commercial environment and providing a safer and cleaner space for both tourists and residents.
With consecutive selections for public projects, Pyeongchang County has established a foundation to gradually implement the undergrounding of power lines in core urban areas. The county plans to continue working closely with Korea Electric Power Corporation and other related organizations to ensure smooth project execution, while consistently expanding infrastructure to improve the urban landscape, ensure pedestrian safety, and enhance the region's image.
Lee Jeongui, Head of the County Urban Division, stated, "The undergrounding of power lines is not just about improving the environment-it is an important project that elevates both the safety of residents and the dignity of the region," adding, "We will continue to actively seek out public projects that bring about changes residents can truly feel."
