Maintains Top Spot for a Month After Release
"Cashierro" and "Black and White Chef 2" Also Rank High
The film "The Great Flood," starring Kim Dami and Park Hae-soo, has maintained the top spot on Netflix's non-English film chart for four consecutive weeks. Even a month after its release, it continues to record steady viewing hours, solidifying its long-term box office success.
According to Netflix's official website "Tudum" on January 14, "The Great Flood" recorded 5.2 million views (calculated by dividing total viewing hours by runtime) from January 5 to 11, ranking first in the non-English film category. After its release on December 19, the film debuted with 27.9 million views, peaked in its second week with 33.1 million views, and continued to hold the number one spot in both the third (11.1 million) and fourth weeks. The film made it into the "Top 10" in 56 countries, including Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Japan.
Directed by Kim Byung-woo, this film is a science fiction story depicting the struggles of Anna (played by Kim Dami), an artificial intelligence (AI) researcher, as she fights to save her son in the midst of an unstoppable disaster. The complex storytelling, which goes beyond a simple disaster narrative to combine AI ethics and maternal love in extreme situations, is analyzed as a key factor in attracting a steady global audience.
Director Yeon Sang-ho's new film "The Face" also had a promising start. Released on January 5, it recorded 2 million views in its first week, entering the non-English film category at fifth place. Based on the director's own 2018 webtoon of the same name, the film follows the story of a visually impaired seal engraver and his quest to uncover the truth behind his mother's death after she returns as a skeleton. When it was released in Korea in September last year, the film attracted 1.07 million viewers.
Korean content continued to show strength in the series category as well. The superhero series "Cashierro," starring Lee Junho, ranked fourth in the non-English TV show category with 2.3 million views, followed by the variety show "Black and White Chef" Season 2 in fifth place. In addition, the ENA drama "Idol-i" (seventh), SBS's "Shouldn't Have Kissed!" (eighth), and tvN's "Pro Bono" (ninth) all placed within the top 10, demonstrating strong and balanced performances.
