Trump Declares "We Will Have Greenland" After Maduro's Ouster
"No Set Timeline, But It Is Certainly a Priority"
Randy Fine, a Republican member of the House of Representatives from Florida, has introduced a bill proposing that Greenland become the 51st state of the United States. Former President Donald Trump has also previously demonstrated a strong interest in acquiring Greenland.
According to The Hill, a U.S. congressional news outlet, on January 12 (local time), Fine's office announced the introduction of the "Greenland Annexation and Statehood Act," stating, "Greenland is not a remote outpost we can ignore, but a critical asset for national security."
The office further argued that whoever controls Greenland will determine the security structure that protects key Arctic shipping routes and the United States itself. Fine's office added, "We cannot entrust America's future to regimes that despise our values and seek to undermine our security."
Under the bill, President Trump would be granted the authority to take necessary measures, including negotiating with the Kingdom of Denmark to annex Greenland as U.S. territory or to acquire it by other means. Once the annexation of Greenland is complete, the president must submit a report to Congress-including proposed amendments to federal law-required to expedite the approval of statehood for Greenland.
Since his first term in office, President Trump had expressed interest in purchasing Greenland. In his second term, he has openly made several statements indicating his desire to acquire Greenland, despite opposition from Denmark and other European countries directly involved.
Furthermore, after the recent ousting of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Trump has taken an even more hardline stance, stating, "In one way or another, we will have Greenland," thereby escalating tensions in the Arctic region.
At a press briefing on the same day, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to a question about whether there was a deadline for the United States to acquire Greenland by stating, "There is no set timeline, but it is certainly a priority."
