Kim Dongyeon: "Mokgam Bridge in Gwangmyeong to Be Expanded to Four Lanes in Both Directions by 2028"

Kim Dongyeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, has pledged to complete the expansion of the Mokgam Bridge in Gwangmyeong City by 2028.

On January 13, Governor Kim visited the Mokgam Bridge expansion construction site in Gwangmyeong City to inspect the progress of the project and listen to the opinions of local residents.

Governor Kim stated, "The current width of Mokgam Bridge is 7 meters, but it will be expanded to 23 meters with four lanes in both directions. In addition, a pedestrian bridge, which does not exist now, will also be constructed. I believe this will dramatically improve transportation convenience for Gwangmyeong citizens."

He added, "Although there have been many twists and turns in the expansion of Mokgam Bridge, the issues have now been resolved. We will complete the design within this year and strive to finish construction by 2028. Gyeonggi Province will also work to resolve transportation issues in cooperation with Guro District across the bridge."

Mokgam Bridge, completed in 1984, is a two-lane bridge that serves as a key transportation route connecting Gwangmyeong City and Guro District in Seoul. Currently, traffic congestion repeatedly occurs during commuting hours due to increased traffic volume, and the number of lanes and bridge structure have been unable to meet transportation demand, causing ongoing inconvenience for residents.

Gwangmyeong City has anticipated that traffic congestion will worsen once residents begin moving into Gwangmyeong New Town in earnest. As a result, the city has been pursuing projects such as expanding Mokgam Bridge to four lanes in both directions, rebuilding the bridge, and improving nearby at-grade intersections.

However, since Mokgam Bridge is a metropolitan transportation facility that crosses administrative boundaries, negotiations have been delayed due to the issue of sharing project costs with Guro District in Seoul, making it difficult to move the project forward.

To resolve these structural issues, Gyeonggi Province has considered providing approximately 2 billion won in provincial funding and has taken on a mediating role in negotiations between Gwangmyeong City and Seoul City.

Once the Mokgam Bridge expansion project is completed, travel in the northwestern part of Gwangmyeong-from the Gwangmyeong New Town Samgeori intersection to the Hyundai Apartment Samgeori intersection in Guro District-will become more convenient. The alleviation of bottlenecks at intersections is also expected to improve commuting conditions and traffic safety.
