Base Fare Raised by 500 Won, Reflecting Rising Costs of Living and Deteriorating Conditions in the Taxi Industry
Follow-Up Measures After Gyeongbuk Provincial Price Policy Committee’s Decision to Increase Taxi Fares
Taxi fares have finally increased, unable to withstand the burden of rising fuel and labor costs.
Pohang City announced that starting January 20, the base taxi fare will rise by 500 won, from the current 4,000 won to 4,500 won.
This taxi fare hike reflects both the increase in the cost of living and the deterioration of business conditions in the taxi industry.
The base fare will be raised from 4,000 won to 4,500 won. The distance fare will be adjusted from 131 meters per 100 won to 128 meters per 100 won, and the time fare will change from 31 seconds per 100 won to 30 seconds per 100 won. The late-night surcharge will remain unchanged.
To reduce potential disputes between drivers and passengers following the fare increase, the city is conducting public outreach for one month. This includes posting notices about the fare hike inside taxis, promoting the change through the Bus Information System (BIS), displaying banners in towns and villages, utilizing the city’s website, and providing information during various meetings.
A Pohang City official stated, "The taxi fare increase is a measure to stabilize the management of the taxi industry and to improve service quality. The higher fares will be returned to citizens in the form of better service," and asked for citizens’ understanding and cooperation.
As a follow-up to the decision by the Gyeongbuk Provincial Price Policy Committee on December 4 to raise taxi fares and rates, Pohang City held a meeting with taxi transport operators on December 23 in accordance with the 'Guidelines for Adjusting Passenger Carriage Transport Business Fares and Rates,' and finalized the detailed adjustments through the required procedures.
