Leading the Shift in the U.S. Luxury Car Market
Genesis is rapidly expanding its presence in the U.S. luxury car market, surpassing Infiniti, the premium brand of Japan’s Nissan, in performance. This shift, achieved a decade after entering the U.S. market, is seen as causing a disruption in the landscape of the American luxury car segment.
According to Automotive News, a U.S. automotive media outlet, on January 11 (local time), Genesis sold 82,331 vehicles in the U.S. market last year, significantly outpacing the annual sales of Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury brand, which sold 52,846 units.
As recently as 2020, Genesis’s sales in the U.S. were only about one-fifth of Infiniti’s. However, Genesis has continued to grow each year, and in just a few years, it has reversed the rankings.
Genesis’s U.S. sales in its debut year of 2016 amounted to just 6,948 units, but have steadily increased, growing nearly twelvefold over the past decade. As a result, Genesis has firmly established itself as a solid top-six player in the U.S. luxury car market, strengthening its presence.
Until now, the U.S. luxury car market has been dominated by Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Lexus, followed by Acura, Lincoln, and Infiniti.
However, since 2022, Genesis has overtaken Infiniti and is rapidly closing the gap with Acura and Lincoln, making changes in the mid-tier segment increasingly visible. Industry insiders suggest that Genesis could surpass Lincoln as early as this year.
The brand’s upscale strategy and SUV-focused lineup are key drivers behind this growth. In addition to its “Athletic Elegance” design strategy, the GV70 and GV80 have led sales, with SUVs accounting for more than 80% of Genesis’s U.S. sales last year.
Furthermore, the positive response to its electric vehicle models has contributed to its momentum. Genesis plans to continue this growth by sequentially introducing electrified models this year, including hybrids (HEV) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREV).
