The Korean National Police University announced on January 12 that it has been accredited as an internationally recognized testing institution in the field of forensic science by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS), which operates under the National Institute of Technology and Standards of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The accredited category this time is handwriting and document examination, which is one of 15 forensic science testing areas. The specific scope includes forensic analysis of handwriting and document forgery detection through handwriting examination and ink comparison. As a result, test reports issued by the Advanced Security Science and Technology Institute of the Korean National Police University will now have the same validity as those issued by testing institutions in over 100 countries that are members of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC).
The Advanced Security Science and Technology Institute has established a quality management system in line with international standards (ISO/IEC 17025), strengthened the expertise of forensic personnel, and dedicated itself to research on forensic techniques using advanced equipment. Handwriting analysis and ink examination are core investigative techniques for detecting document forgery, and this official accreditation is expected to further enhance the evidentiary value of such analyses in future judicial proceedings.
Kim Sunghee, President of the Korean National Police University, stated, "I deeply understand the importance of objective and rational evidence analysis," and added, "I hope the Korean National Police University will continue to serve as a cradle for training forensic security experts and as the premier educational and research institution that gives back to the public."
