Samsung SDS to Build 60MW-Class AI Data Center in Gumi

Samsung SDS, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and Gumi City Sign MOU for AI Data Center Construction
To Be Built on the Site of the Former Samsung Electronics Factory
Equipped with Latest Technologies Including Hybrid Cooling and Ultra-High-Power Racks

Samsung SDS will construct a 60MW (megawatt) artificial intelligence (AI) data center on the site of the former Samsung Electronics factory in Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The center will be equipped with the latest technologies for cooling, power supply, and other systems necessary to operate an AI data center.

On January 7 (local time), Samsung SDS announced at CES 2026, the world’s largest electronics and IT exhibition currently being held in Las Vegas, USA, that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Gumi City for the construction of the Gumi AI Data Center.

Attending the MOU signing ceremony were Lee Junhee, CEO of Samsung SDS, Kim Jangho, Mayor of Gumi, and Yang Geumhee, Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs of Gyeongsangbuk-do.

The Gumi AI Data Center will be built on the site of the former Samsung Electronics Gumi Plant 1, which Samsung SDS acquired from Samsung Electronics in December 2024. The center is scheduled to begin operations in March 2029.

Through the construction of this data center, Samsung SDS aims to secure core infrastructure to respond to the growing demand for AI, while also contributing to revitalizing the local economy of Gumi City and expanding the AI industry ecosystem.

The Gumi AI Data Center is designed to provide an optimal environment for operating high-power IT equipment, focusing on AI and graphics processing unit (GPU)-centered services. To achieve this, it will be built as a demand-responsive hyperscale data center with flexibility, scalability, and reliability.

Samsung SDS will apply the latest technologies to the cooling and power infrastructure to operate the hyperscale data center. First, to address high heat generated in the server rooms, a ‘hybrid cooling’ technology will be introduced that combines air cooling and liquid cooling. This technology supplies chilled water directly to servers that consume high power, such as those with GPUs, while using air cooling for equipment like networks and storage that generate less heat, thereby increasing power efficiency and reducing energy consumption.

Additionally, the server rooms will be designed to accommodate racks with various power densities, and the facility will be built to enable the operation of ultra-high-power racks in the future.

Gyeongsangbuk-do Province and Gumi City plan to provide administrative and institutional support to ensure that Samsung SDS’s investment in the Gumi AI Data Center proceeds smoothly, following the signing of this MOU.

Previously, on January 2, Samsung SDS announced an investment of 427.3 billion won for the new construction of the Gumi AI Data Center. The investment, approved by the board of directors on that day, will be used for the construction of the data center building and the installation of equipment. Additional investments in facilities may be made in the future as the AI infrastructure expands.

Lee Junhee, CEO of Samsung SDS, stated, "Through this investment in the Gumi AI Data Center, we will strengthen our competitiveness in AI infrastructure while contributing to the revitalization of Gumi’s local economy and the development of the industrial ecosystem."

Yang Geumhee, Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs of Gyeongsangbuk-do, commented, "Signing this agreement at CES 2026 is a meaningful achievement that clearly demonstrates Gyeongsangbuk-do’s competitiveness and commitment as an optimal destination for AI infrastructure investment to global markets and investors." Kim Jangho, Mayor of Gumi, added, "With this agreement, Gumi will take another leap forward as a central city for future industries based on AI infrastructure."
