Groundbreaking for Seunggi Wastewater Treatment Plant Modernization in Incheon...Underground Facility by 2032

The Aboveground Area Will Be Reborn as a Public Park

On January 6, Incheon City held a groundbreaking ceremony for the modernization project at the Seunggi Wastewater Treatment Plant located in Dongchun-dong, Yeonsu-gu.

The city plans to invest a total of 426.5 billion won to build a new underground facility at the existing Seunggi Wastewater Treatment Plant capable of processing 270,000 tons of wastewater per day. Above ground, a park will be created and opened to the public.

Additionally, the city will upgrade 1.0 kilometers of existing interceptor sewers and construct a new 4.8-kilometer inflow pipeline for the Namdong National Industrial Complex. The modernization project, which includes these infrastructure improvements, will continue until October 2032.

The Seunggi Wastewater Treatment Plant was originally constructed in 1995 with a daily treatment capacity of 240,000 tons. Due to a surge in wastewater volume caused by urbanization, an additional 35,000 tons of capacity was added in 2007, bringing the current total to 275,000 tons per day. It is the second largest among Incheon's 14 wastewater treatment plants, following the Gajwa Treatment Plant.

The need for modernization has been consistently raised due to the aging facilities, ongoing concerns about exceeding water quality standards from high-concentration wastewater flowing in from the Namdong National Industrial Complex, and persistent complaints about odors.

The city expects that, once the modernization project is completed, complaints about odors in the surrounding area will be resolved and a stable, eco-friendly wastewater treatment system will be established.

Incheon Mayor Yoo Jeongbok stated, "This project is an investment for a new urban environment in Incheon," adding, "We will do our utmost to minimize inconvenience to citizens during the construction period."
