Hyundai and Kia Sell 1.83 Million Vehicles in U.S. Last Year, Setting All-Time Record

Hyundai Surpasses 900,000 Units, Kia Reaches 850,000 Units
Record U.S. Sales for Three Consecutive Years

Hyundai Motor Company and Kia sold 1.83 million vehicles last year, setting an all-time sales record in the United States since entering the market. They have broken their annual sales record for three consecutive years.

Despite a decline in demand for electric vehicles, the companies responded with hybrid models and focused their sales strategy on sport utility vehicles (SUVs), which led to these results.

According to the industry on January 5, Hyundai sold a total of 901,686 vehicles in the United States last year based on wholesale figures, surpassing 900,000 units in annual sales for the first time ever. This represents a 7.9% increase compared to the previous year.

Kia also set a new annual sales record in the United States last year, selling a total of 852,155 vehicles, a 7.0% increase from the previous year.

The combined U.S. sales of Hyundai and Kia reached 1.75 million units, marking the highest performance in history. Including Genesis sales (82,331 units), they sold over 1.8 million vehicles in the United States alone.

Sales growth of eco-friendly vehicles was particularly notable. Hyundai and Kia sold a total of 434,725 eco-friendly vehicles, a 25.5% increase from the previous year and the highest ever. These accounted for 23.7% of total sales, up 3.4 percentage points from the previous year. Hyundai sold 259,419 units (+27.1%) and Kia sold 175,306 units (+23.2%) of eco-friendly vehicles.

Hyundai and Kia's hybrid sales surged to 331,023 units, a sharp increase of 48.8% year-on-year, achieving the highest annual hybrid sales ever. Hyundai achieved record results with 189,881 hybrids sold (+39.6%) and 69,533 electric vehicles (+2.2%). Kia also set a new record with 141,142 hybrids sold.

In contrast, electric vehicles (EVs) totaled 103,697 units, a decrease of 16.3%, while Kia's electric vehicle sales dropped 38.8% to 34,164 units. The decline in demand is attributed to reduced EV subsidies in the United States.

By vehicle type, SUVs continued to dominate. Hyundai's top-selling models were the Tucson (234,230 units), Elantra (148,200 units), and Santa Fe (142,404 units), while Kia's main models were the Sportage (182,823 units), K4 (140,288 units), and Telluride (123,281 units).

In December, Hyundai and Kia sold 162,400 vehicles, a 1.5% increase compared to the same month last year. Hyundai, including Genesis, recorded 87,397 units (+0.9%), while Kia sold 75,003 units (+2.3%). Genesis sales rose 3.8% to 8,467 units, with the GV80 leading at 3,361 units (+26.4%).
