"Fostering Glocal Talent"... Superintendent Kim Daejung Visits Wando Reading and Fisheries Education Sites

Visits to Cheonghae Elementary and Wando Fisheries High School
Accelerating the Nurturing of Future Talents

The head of the Jeonnam Office of Education visited schools in the Wando region to examine the current state of reading education and fisheries-specialized education.


On December 30, Kim Daejung, Superintendent of Education for Jeonnam, visited Wando Cheonghae Elementary School and Wando Fisheries High School consecutively to hear directly from those in the education field.


The purpose of this visit was to review school-specific practices aimed at enhancing students' reading abilities and to assess how foreign students are adapting at Wando Fisheries High School, the only fisheries Meister high school in Jeonnam.

At Cheonghae Elementary School, Superintendent Kim shared examples of reading-focused classes with faculty and discussed ways to foster a reading culture. Cheonghae Elementary is cultivating students’ reading habits through activities such as “Teacher-Student Morning Reading” and “Library (Bookstore) Visits.”


During his visit to Wando Fisheries High School, he engaged in direct conversations with eight international students from Indonesia and the Philippines. After hearing firsthand about their experiences with dormitory life, language education, and cultural differences, Superintendent Kim held in-depth discussions with faculty members on the achievements and areas for improvement in the school’s fisheries-specialized curriculum.


Wando Fisheries High School trains fisheries professionals by combining specialized courses such as fisheries resource aquaculture and fishing vessel operation management with hands-on field training.


Superintendent Kim stated, “The power of reading is fundamental to developing children’s critical thinking and depth of life,” adding, “We will continue to support future talents who will lead the fisheries industry so that they can cultivate both glocal sensibility and on-site expertise.”


The Jeonnam Office of Education plans to further spread reading education models tailored to each school’s characteristics and to create an inclusive educational environment for students from diverse backgrounds, thereby nurturing future talents.
