A man in his 60s was apprehended by police after setting fire to a village community center, claiming he had received too little kimchi that had been prepared collectively in the village.
The Namhae Police Station in South Gyeongsang Province announced that they had arrested a man in his 60s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of arson of a public building.
According to the police, at around 10:00 a.m. on December 29, Mr. A allegedly started a fire by throwing tissue paper, which he had lit with a lighter, onto a massage chair inside a community center in Gohyeon-myeon, Namhae County.
During the police investigation, Mr. A reportedly stated that he committed the crime because he felt slighted after being refused additional kimchi when he complained that his portion, distributed by the village women's association during the kimchi-making event, was too small.
The fire was extinguished by firefighters who responded to a resident's report at around 10:14 a.m. that day.
There were no casualties from the fire, but furniture and fixtures inside the community center were burned.
The police have applied for an arrest warrant for Mr. A, who has admitted to the crime, and are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident, including questioning Mr. A and local residents.
