Pocheon City has been selected as the final recipient in Gyeonggi Province's public contest for the Gyeonggi Climate Safe Shade Project, a specialized initiative utilizing shared land within the province. With this selection, the city has secured a special adjustment grant of 1.48 billion won, which will be allocated to expanding the distribution of public renewable energy.
The Gyeonggi Climate Safe Shade Project is part of Gyeonggi Province's ongoing "Public RE100" initiative. The project aims to increase the currently low ratio of renewable energy generation and ensure that residents can tangibly benefit from renewable energy distribution. It serves as a catalyst for renewable energy adoption, a practical measure to improve the province's energy self-sufficiency rate, and a means to achieve RE100 (100% renewable energy) through eco-friendly energy transition.
To be selected for this project, Pocheon City conducted a thorough analysis of annual energy consumption data for 10 public buildings within its jurisdiction. The city then applied for facilities in order of those with the highest expected benefits from energy transition. After evaluation by the Gyeonggi Province Energy Industry Division, three facilities were ultimately chosen.
Notably, on October 16, when Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dongyeon visited Machimi Village in Ugum 1-ri, Gasan-myeon, which was selected as the "Best Village for Gyeonggi RE100," the city requested support for an energy transition project at the Yeongjung-myeon Livestock Manure Public Treatment Facility. This resulted in the installation of a 215 kW solar power facility. This project was recognized for its validity as it enables both the rural RE100 economy and energy self-sufficiency in energy-vulnerable areas, aligning with the growing importance of food sovereignty in the era of climate change.
In addition, Pocheon City will install 250 kW of renewable energy at Myeonam Central Library in Sinbuk-myeon and 360 kW at the Jangja Public Wastewater Treatment Facility. These installations are expected to not only reduce electricity costs but also enhance resident welfare and improve the competitiveness of local industrial complexes.
A Pocheon City official stated, "This project will help streamline Pocheon City's finances and contribute to achieving RE100 through eco-friendly energy transition. We will continue to actively identify and promote projects to expand the supply of renewable energy, thereby improving resident welfare through the realization of RE100."
