25% of Non-Textile Products Fail to Meet Standards
Widespread Detection of Counterfeits and Safety Violations
Toy Safety Breaches and Missing Technical Documentation
French Authorities Announce Tighter Oversight
French authorities have conducted a large-scale inspection of parcels brought in through the Chinese e-commerce platform Shein, revealing that one out of every four non-clothing items failed to meet regulatory standards.
According to local media such as Le Parisien on December 27 (local time), the French Customs Administration carried out a comprehensive inspection of more than 320,000 parcels (over 500,000 items) shipped from Shein and arriving at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport since November 6. The investigation found that approximately 25% of non-textile products, excluding clothing and other textile goods, were non-compliant.
The main violations included counterfeit goods, insufficient labeling on cosmetics, missing technical documentation for electrical products, and failure to comply with toy safety regulations. However, the authorities did not disclose the exact number of products detected or details regarding their disposal.
Regarding the relatively low rate of non-compliance among textile products, authorities analyzed that Shein's proactive measures had an impact. Just days before the inspection began, Shein closed its marketplace for third-party sellers and switched to a system selling only its own branded products.
This comprehensive inspection was triggered after it was revealed in October that an adult doll resembling a child was being sold on the Shein website. In response, the French government filed a court injunction to suspend Shein's operations for three months, but on December 19, the court dismissed the request.
