2026 Byeongo Year Cheonseongsan Sunrise Event to Be Held
Round Sun Expected to Appear at Around 7:26 a.m.
The morning at Cheonseongsan, the place where the sun rises first in South Korea, will be even more special this year.
The city of Yangsan, Gyeongnam announced that the third annual Yangsan Cheonseongsan Sunrise Event will be held at the Cheonseongdae area of Cheonseongsan on January 1, 2026, hosted and organized by the Yangsan Magnolia Lions Club.
Cheonseongsan, one of Yangsan's 12 scenic spots, is well known as the place where you can witness the earliest sunrise on the Korean Peninsula. The first sunrise of the new year is expected to reveal its round face above the East Sea horizon as seen from the mountain summit at around 7:26 a.m.
The year 2026, symbolized by the strong energy of the Red Horse, is considered a year of vitality and a time for citizens to take action on long-postponed plans, bringing about change and innovation. As it marks both the 30th anniversary of Yangsan’s elevation to city status and the 'Year of Visiting Yangsan,' the year holds even greater significance as the city embarks on a new leap forward.
This sunrise event will feature a stage program before the sunrise viewing (from 6:30 a.m. until sunrise), starting with a video and laser show capturing the Cheonseongsan sunrise. There will also be a Buddhist dance performance symbolizing a new beginning after letting go of past worries, a drum performance wishing for great fortune in the new year, and a Jisinbalgi ritual to drive away evil spirits and pray for the health and luck of citizens using the energy of the earth.
A food booth (open from 6:00 a.m. until supplies run out) will also operate, offering warmth to citizens waiting for the sunrise inside a heated tent, with fish cake soup, rice cake skewers, and hot beverages available.
Additionally, side events (from 6:00 to 8:00 a.m.) will allow participants to write their New Year wishes on wish papers and enjoy photo zones featuring red installations and sunrise viewing points for added fun.
The event organizers stated, "We have made safety our top priority in cooperation with Yangsan City, and we hope you pay attention to the shuttle bus schedule and come to enjoy the sunrise event."
A Yangsan City official said, "We ask for your understanding regarding traffic control on the Cheonseongsan access roads due to the risks of winter travel and nighttime hiking," and added, "We kindly request your active cooperation for a safe event."
