On December 25, the Seoul Metropolitan Government announced that the 14th Urban Planning Committee's Rapid Integrated Planning Subcommittee had approved, with modifications, the 'Reconstruction Project Maintenance Plan and Designation of Maintenance Area and Landscape Review (Draft)' for the Gwangjang Geukdong Apartment reconstruction project the previous day.
With this reconstruction, the Gwangjang Geukdong Apartment complex, originally completed in 1985, will be transformed from its current 1,344 units to a maximum of 49 stories and 2,049 units, including 475 rental units. The complex is pursuing an integrated reconstruction of both Phase 1, completed in 1985 with 448 units, and Phase 2, completed in 1989 with 896 units.
The maintenance project will expand the pedestrian and green axis connecting the Han River and the complex. The existing green area along Cheonho-daero will be reorganized, and a new pedestrian·green axis will be created, connecting a new children's park to the Han River, thereby improving residents' access to the river and enhancing the pedestrian environment.

The subway entrance for Gwangnaru Station will be relocated inside the complex, significantly improving pedestrian mobility in the previously narrow Achasan-ro area. Neighborhood amenities and public facilities will be placed adjacent to the subway entrance to revitalize the streetscape, enhance accessibility for residents, and improve daily convenience.
Within the complex, public facilities such as a day care center for the elderly, a Seoul-style kids' cafe, a community care center, a daycare center, and a small library will be established. Living service spaces will be expanded to serve a wide range of generations, including seniors·infants·children·and adolescents.
Choi Jinseok, Director of Housing at the Seoul Metropolitan Government, stated, "The reconstruction of Gwangjang Geukdong Apartment will leverage its prime location along the Han River, while strengthening pedestrian access, green spaces, and public facilities to supply high-quality housing for over 2,000 households. We expect this project to become a leading example of improving residents' quality of life and creating a residential environment that harmonizes with the local community."
