Gijang County (Governor Jeong Jongbok) announced on the 24th that it had been selected as an outstanding local government in the 'Korea Makeover' campaign performance evaluation, organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and secured a special grant of 50 million won as an incentive.
This evaluation was conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety for 243 local governments nationwide, comprehensively assessing achievements in improving public living spaces and enhancing the national image ahead of major national events such as the Chuseok holiday and the APEC Summit, from September 22 to October 1.
Gijang County received high marks for actively promoting the 'Makeover Campaign' with joint participation from both the public and private sectors in connection with 'Urban Environment Maintenance Day.' In particular, the county focused its administrative capabilities on systematically improving the city's appearance in preparation for the National Sports Festival and providing visitors with a pleasant and organized urban image.
A total of 864 participants, including public officials, related organizations, social groups, and volunteers, took part in this campaign. Intensive maintenance was carried out at 113 environmentally vulnerable locations, including major gateway areas, stadiums and tourist attractions, roads, rivers, coasts, and traditional markets. As a result, 22.645 tons of abandoned waste were collected, 82 cases of illegal advertisements that damaged the cityscape were removed, and 41 cases of street obstructions causing inconvenience to pedestrians were addressed, achieving visible environmental improvements.
Jeong Jongbok, Governor of Gijang County, stated, "This achievement is not only the result of administrative efforts but also of the community and residents coming together with a shared commitment to beautifying our hometown," adding, "We will continue to build Gijang into a clean and livable premium city based on cooperation with residents."
