On December 23, Seoul City announced that it had selected 16 construction engineers and organizations who contributed to the expansion of urban infrastructure and the development of construction technology and industry in Seoul this year as recipients of the 10th Seoul Metropolitan Construction Awards. The award ceremony was held on the afternoon of the 22nd at the auditorium of the Welfare Building in Seosomun Government Complex.
The Seoul Metropolitan Construction Awards began in 2004 as the Seoul Metropolitan Civil Engineering Awards and were renamed in 2016 when the award was reorganized as a civic award. A total of 205 construction professionals have been honored up to last year.
Since August, the city has recruited candidates through recommendations from construction-related institutions, organizations, associations, and universities. Final awardees were selected through a first-round review by an internal working-level committee and a subsequent review by the official awards committee. The evaluation considered contributions to the advancement of construction technology and policy, efforts made during project implementation, and the effectiveness of results.
This year, a total of 16 recipients were selected: 11 in the Attractive Seoul category, 2 in the Safe Seoul category, and 3 in the Technology Innovation category. Kolon Global, which was selected as the Grand Prize winner, was recognized for transforming perceptions of resource circulation centers, improving the quality of life for citizens, and helping to create a local landmark. The Gangdong Resource Circulation Center began construction in 2020 and was completed in October of this year.
The top prize in the Attractive Seoul category went to Jin Lin, CEO of Urban Design Group, who developed a strategy to foster future industry hubs in northeastern Seoul; Hong Sungki, Executive Director of Anders Engineering, who led the overhaul of district unit plan floor area ratio systems and comprehensive redevelopment projects; and HLD, which established standards for sustainable three-dimensional infrastructure (parks).
The Excellence Award recipients are: Chunbaek Landscape (creation of Seoul Plaza Forest); Heo Seongcheol, Executive Director of Mano Construction (construction of a new building at the Hangang Bus Dock); Ahn Hoyoung, Executive Director of Donghae Engineering Consultants (construction of the AI Support Center, among others); Na Gwitae, Executive Director of Korea Engineering Consultants Corporation (construction technology review committee member, design of the underground public parking lot at Gasan-dong Neighborhood Park, etc.); Kim Namcheol, Executive Director of Donghae Engineering Consultants (reorganization of pedestrian-friendly spaces on Changgyeonggung-ro); Saeam Landscape Co., Ltd. (creation of the open garden at the main gate of Hwangudan); and Jeong Eunho, Executive Director of Kyungho Engineering & Architects (Gangdong Resource Circulation Center), totaling seven awardees.
In the Safe Seoul category, the top prize went to Lee Sangyeol, CEO of Haje Engineering & Architects, for his efforts to establish a safety culture through supervision education for building demolition projects. The Excellence Award was given to Shin Hyungil, CEO of Naega System, for his work on the maintenance and functional enhancement of the sewer management computer system.
In the Technology Innovation category, the top prize went to Park Taewon, Director of Dongil Engineering Consultants, for his contribution to establishing BIM application guidelines for Seoul City. The Excellence Awards went to Choi Youngguk, CEO of Geosong (construction technology review committee member and technical advisor to the Seoul Arisu Headquarters), and Jeong Dongcheol, President of Geukdong Electric Technology Group (construction technology review committee member in the field of electrical power facilities), totaling two recipients.
Awardees will receive a plaque and will be given priority for appointment as members of the Seoul Metropolitan Construction Technology Review Committee or the New Construction Technology Utilization Review Committee, which are responsible for various reviews and on-site inspections to ensure the quality and safety of Seoul's construction projects.
Kim Seongbo, Second Vice Mayor for Administration of Seoul, stated, "I hope that the Construction Awards will serve as a valuable foundation for the construction industry to make a new leap forward in these challenging times. We will continue to discover and honor dedicated construction professionals on the front lines and work to spread a high-quality construction culture."
