In the early morning hours, several drivers were apprehended by the police after driving under the influence and either plunging their vehicles into the construction site of Urban Railway Line 2 or crashing into bridge piers.
The Bukbu Police Station in Gwangju announced on December 19 that they are investigating and have booked Mr. A, in his 20s, without detention on suspicion of drunk driving under the Road Traffic Act.
Mr. A is accused of driving his own passenger car while intoxicated at around 3:23 a.m. that day on the road in front of Goryeo High School, near the construction site of Urban Railway Line 2 in Samgak-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju.
The vehicle driven by Mr. A struck a traffic facility and then entered the construction site. A citizen who witnessed the incident reported it, leading to the discovery of Mr. A's drunk driving. At the time, his blood alcohol concentration was confirmed to be at a level warranting license revocation.
Earlier, at around 12:30 a.m. the same day, another vehicle driven by Mr. B, also in his 20s, crashed into the Yuun Bridge and came to a stop on a road near Mudeung Stadium in Im-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju.
A citizen who witnessed the accident reported it to the police. Mr. B refused to comply with the police's request for a breathalyzer test three times and was arrested on the spot.
The police have booked Mr. B on suspicion of refusing a breathalyzer test under the Road Traffic Act and are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.
