At the Sinansan Line construction site near Yeouido Station in Seoul, a collapse of reinforcing bars resulted in seven workers being buried.
According to police and fire authorities, at 1:22 p.m. on December 18, a report was received stating that people were trapped under collapsed reinforcing bars at the Sinansan Line underpass construction site in front of Exit 2 of Yeouido Station.
A male worker in his 50s was found in cardiac arrest and was transported to a nearby hospital while receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Another male worker in his 50s sustained an ankle injury and was also taken to the hospital. A foreign worker in his 30s managed to reach the surface on his own and received on-site treatment for a wrist abrasion.
The remaining workers had taken shelter in a vertical shaft underground and were all rescued by fire authorities at 2:52 p.m.
The accident is believed to have occurred 70 meters underground during concrete pouring work, when the reinforcing bars fell.
The police are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
Due to this incident, some traffic is being restricted on the section from National Assembly Station to Saetgang Station in Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu.
