"A Crucial Turning Point for Balanced Development in South Korea"
As the issue of relocating the Gwangju military airport reached a final agreement under government leadership, Gwangju Seo District officially expressed its welcome.
On December 18, Kim Ikang, Mayor of Gwangju Seo District, stated, "The relocation of the Gwangju military airport has finally reached an agreement through dialogue and solidarity," adding, "Together with the 280,000 residents of Seo District, I welcome this decision."
He continued, "It is a meaningful decision in which the state has taken direct responsibility to turn decades of regional conflict into coexistence," and evaluated, "This will serve as a crucial turning point for balanced development not only in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, but also across South Korea."
Regarding Seo District, Mayor Kim remarked, "It is significant that this has created an opportunity to move forward with the relocation of the Mareuk-dong ammunition depot, which has long been an obstacle to urban development," and added, "I hope the agreement on the military airport relocation will accelerate and ensure the successful completion of the ammunition depot relocation."
He concluded, "What matters now is implementing the agreement," emphasizing, "The government, Gwangju City, and South Jeolla Province must cooperate responsibly so that this agreement leads to real changes in citizens' daily lives."
He also stated, "Seo District will work closely with relevant agencies to ensure the agreement does not remain merely a declaration, but is fully carried out to the end."
