The police are questioning Jeong Wonju, former chief secretary to President Han Hakja, in connection with allegations that political figures received money and valuables from the Unification Church.
The Special Investigation Task Force of the National Police Agency summoned Jeong as a witness at 9:43 a.m. on December 18 at the National Police Agency building in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul.
Jeong is known as the second-in-command of the church, having served as Deputy Director of Cheonmuwon, the highest administrative body of the Unification Church, and is considered one of President Han’s closest aides.
Jeong did not respond to reporters’ questions, including whether money or valuables were delivered to political circles, whether there were any instructions from President Han, whether 28 billion won was used for political lobbying, and the source of the funds in the safe.
The police plan to focus their investigation on allegations that, between 2018 and 2020, the Unification Church provided tens of millions of won in cash and luxury watches to Jeon Jae-soo, former Minister of Oceans and Fisheries; Lim Jongseong, former Democratic Party lawmaker; and Kim Gyuhwan, former United Future Party lawmaker.
