Consumer Insight Reports on AI Service Usage Rates
Gemini Sees 16 Percentage Point Increase in Usage
Launch of "RYUTEN 3.0" with Enhanced Personalization Features Drives Growth
It has been found that three out of four domestic consumers have used an average of 2.2 artificial intelligence (AI) services. By service, OpenAI's ChatGPT is leading in all metrics, while Google's Gemini and the local service RYUTEN are rapidly catching up.
Consumer Insight, a mobile communications research agency, released on December 18 the results of its analysis of AI service usage among 3,148 mobile phone users aged 14 and older, conducted over a month starting in October.
Seventy-four percent of respondents said they had used an AI service at least once. The most common usage frequency was 'three to four times a week' (26%), followed by 'once or twice a week' and 'almost every day,' each at 23%. Among those with experience, 72% use AI services at least once a week.
By age group, those in their 30s (86%) and 20s (83%) had the highest usage rates, followed by those in their 40s and teens (each 76%), and those in their 50s (67%).
By service, ChatGPT ranked first with a usage rate of 54%, up 7 percentage points from the first half of the year (47%). It is the only service with a majority user base and continues to expand its reach.
Gemini by Google came in second at 30%. While still trailing ChatGPT, it showed a remarkable increase (+16 percentage points), doubling its user base in just half a year. Among domestic services, A.Dot (17%) and RYUTEN (13%) ranked third and fourth, respectively.
A.Dot saw its usage rate stagnate compared to the first half of the year (down 1 percentage point), falling one spot behind Gemini, while RYUTEN (up 6 percentage points) climbed one spot during the same period. The rise of RYUTEN was largely attributed to the launch of 'RYUTEN 3.0,' which strengthened personalized features such as AI search, productivity assistance, and 'My Own AI.' Next, Clova Note (10%) ranked fifth with a double-digit share, followed by Perplexity (8%), Copilot (7%), Clova X (6%), Notion AI (5%), and IXIO (4%) rounding out the top 10.
ChatGPT also maintained its lead in awareness ('have heard of or know the name') at 66%. Gemini ranked second at 49%, showing a significant increase (+18 percentage points) and closing in on the leader. A.Dot, in third place (42%), saw a slight decline, while RYUTEN (34%) made a significant jump (+20 percentage points) to fourth place, mirroring the usage rate rankings.
In terms of user satisfaction, ChatGPT led by a wide margin at 68%, far ahead of the joint second-place group of Gemini, IXIO, and Perplexity (each at 59%).
A Consumer Insight representative commented, "While ChatGPT remains dominant across all consumer metrics, it cannot afford to be complacent. Considering the rapid rise of Gemini, which doubled its usage rate in just six months, and the growth speed of RYUTEN, it is only a matter of time before the market landscape changes." The representative added, "With the strength of domestic services familiar to Korean consumers, such as Clova X, and the market expansion of Microsoft's Copilot, which is strong in the enterprise sector, there are many variables, and the possibility of market restructuring remains open."
