AMD CEO Lisa Su Visits Lenovo

Just One Week After US Eases Semiconductor Restrictions, AMD CEO Visits Lenovo Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, selected as Time magazine's "CEO of the Year 2024." Time Magazine

Just over a week after the United States eased its semiconductor export restrictions to China on December 8 (local time), Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, visited Lenovo, China's largest PC manufacturer, in Beijing.

According to Chinese business media outlet Yicai and the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 17th, CEO Su visited China the previous day and toured the headquarters of Lenovo Group, a Chinese computer manufacturer based in Beijing, where she observed Lenovo's latest products and technological achievements, including humanoid robots.

Subsequently, photos released through Chinese social media platforms such as Xiaohongshu showed CEO Lisa Su standing alongside Liu Jun, President of Lenovo China, and several humanoid robots.

The SCMP noted that CEO Su's visit to China took place as semiconductor companies are seeking new opportunities amid intensifying US-China technological competition and regulatory uncertainty.

On December 8, US President Donald Trump announced that exports of Nvidia's advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chip, the "H200," to China would be permitted. However, Nvidia's latest chip, "Blackwell," and the "Rubin" chip scheduled for release next year, are not included in this agreement.

Bloomberg reported that 25% of the sales amount will be collected by the US government in the form of a surcharge. According to a Commerce Department official, the additional 25% tariff will be imposed when the chips are brought from manufacturing facilities in Taiwan into the United States. This is part of a security review conducted by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the US Department of Commerce. Once the inspection is complete, the chips will be shipped to approved customers in China.

Meanwhile, AMD declined to comment on the visit when asked for a statement.
