Real-Time Transshipment Management Powered by AI and Blockchain
Enhancing Competitiveness Through Delay and Connection Risk Prediction
Busan Port Authority is set to officially distribute its AI and blockchain-based transshipment monitoring system, 'Port-i,' to all shipping companies and terminal operators using Busan Port.
On the morning of December 16, the authority announced that it would begin providing the Port-i transshipment monitoring system to shipping companies and terminal operators at Busan Port.
Busan Port is the world’s second-largest transshipment port, with transshipment cargo accounting for approximately 55% of its total throughput, or 13.5 million TEU annually. The accuracy and speed of transshipment processing are considered key factors determining the port's competitiveness.
Port-i is an integrated monitoring system designed to provide a comprehensive overview of transshipment cargo handling. It offers map-based AIS (Automatic Identification System) information, enables real-time monitoring of vessel and cargo movements, and features anomaly detection capabilities. Another major feature is the integrated berth schedule for all 10 terminals at Busan Port.
In particular, by leveraging AI technology, the system predicts and detects risks of vessel schedule delays, operational delays, and transshipment connection risks. Blockchain technology is used to ensure the reliability and transparency of transshipment information, enabling precise management throughout the entire transshipment process.
This system rollout targets all terminal operators and shipping companies at Busan Port. The authority plans to first apply the system to frontline users directly involved in transshipment operations, then enhance its utility by incorporating improvements identified during the operational phase.
The authority also plans to further advance Port-i in 2026. This includes integration with overseas ports, expanded application of global AIS, and broader use of AI and blockchain technologies, with the goal of evolving the system into one that is connected to the global logistics environment.
Port-i can be accessed through Busan Port’s integrated logistics platform, 'Chain Portal,' and related services are available after company membership registration. The authority will also provide user guidance and technical support in parallel.
Song Sanggeun, President of the authority, stated, "Members of Busan Port, including shipping companies and terminal operators, will be able to carry out transshipment work more efficiently through Port-i," adding, "We expect this to be an opportunity for Busan Port’s transshipment competitiveness to take another leap forward."
