Excellence in Community Social Security Plan, Integrated Healthcare and Caregiving Support, and Solitary Death Prevention
Pohang has proven that caregiving is not just a policy, but a way of life.
Pohang City received institutional commendations from both the Ministry of Health and Welfare and Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in recognition of its achievements in local welfare, healthcare and caregiving, and the prevention of solitary deaths.
This recognition is the result of the city's consistent efforts, including the implementation of the 2024 Community Social Security Plan, the establishment of an integrated support system for healthcare and caregiving, and the ongoing pursuit of citizen-centered, customized welfare policies such as the prevention of solitary deaths and social isolation.
First, Pohang City received the Excellence Award in the "2024 Community Social Security Plan Implementation Results Evaluation," earning a commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare.
The city was highly praised for promoting customized projects that reflect the diverse welfare needs of residents and for strengthening public-private cooperation systems to systematically connect local welfare resources. These efforts were recognized for improving the quality of life for citizens and establishing a sustainable foundation for community welfare.
In addition, to proactively respond to the super-aged society, Pohang City launched the "Pohang-Type Integrated Care Support Project" and has been building a community care safety net by organically linking healthcare and caregiving services.
Based on these efforts, the city was also recognized in the field of integrated healthcare and caregiving support, receiving another commendation from the Minister of Health and Welfare for its contribution to creating an environment where citizens can live healthily and safely within their community.
Furthermore, Pohang City received the Excellence Award in the "Best Practices Contest for Preventing Solitary Deaths and Social Isolation," organized by Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, earning a commendation from the provincial governor and a prize of 1 million won. The entire prize money will be donated to the Pohang Scholarship Foundation to foster local talent.
So far, the city has continuously carried out multifaceted preventive activities such as identifying households at risk of isolation, conducting regular check-ins, and providing counseling and emotional support. Its efforts to restore relationships among neighbors and strengthen community bonds received high marks in this evaluation.
Mayor Lee Kangdeok stated, "This award is a meaningful achievement created together by citizens and the community. Moving forward, we will continue to pursue comprehensive welfare policies that leave no one behind, proactively responding to the changing welfare environment such as the super-aged society and social isolation, to create a warm city where citizens can truly feel the benefits."
