Over 5 GWh of Energy Saved Annually
Samsung Electronics has demonstrated that its SmartThings ‘AI Eco Mode’ can reduce energy consumption by approximately 30%. This is equivalent to the amount of electricity used by 14,000 households in Seoul over one month during the summer.
Samsung Electronics announced on the 14th that it achieved these results through verification of the energy-saving effects of AI Eco Mode in collaboration with the global carbon verification organization Carbon Trust. The actual measurements were conducted over a one-year period from July last year to June this year, targeting about 187,000 high-efficiency Samsung washing machines in use across 126 countries.

‘AI Eco Mode’ is a feature that manages and reduces the energy usage of home appliances connected to SmartThings. According to the verification, AI Eco Mode reduced total energy consumption by about 5.02 GWh, which is approximately 30% of the overall usage. The 5.02 GWh saved is equivalent to the electricity consumed by 14,000 households in Seoul over one month during the summer.
This verification was conducted under conditions where users could freely configure AI Eco Mode. The more frequently AI Eco Mode is used, the greater the energy-saving effect is expected to be. Additionally, it is significant that, for the first time in the industry, the actual carbon reduction effects were measured on products in use, based on the carbon emission and reduction measurement standards of the Decarbonization of Use Phase for Connected Devices (DUCD) initiative. Led by Carbon Trust, DUCD aims to standardize methods for measuring energy consumption and savings of connected devices, with participation from Samsung and various global IT companies.
Moon Jongseung, Executive Vice President of the Digital Appliances (DA) Division at Samsung Electronics, stated, “Samsung Electronics carefully considers the environmental impact from the planning stage of appliances and services through to the use phase, including AI Eco Mode. Based on this international verification, we will further strengthen our leadership in high-efficiency appliances and focus on developing features that enhance energy efficiency.”
Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics is scheduled to hold “The Firstlook” event at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, United States, in January next year, where it will showcase a variety of innovative home appliances that support AI Eco Mode.
