Seongdong District Selected as Seoul's Only Excellent Institution for Climate Disaster Response

Securing a Special Grant of 150 Million Won
Through Systematic Heatwave Response Measures

Seongdong District in Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) was the only autonomous district in Seoul to be selected as an excellent institution in the '2025 Climate Disaster Response Evaluation' conducted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. Along with receiving the Minister's Award, the district also secured a special grant of 150 million won.

Seongdong District Selected as Seoul's Only Excellent Institution for Climate Disaster Response Seongdong District was the only autonomous district in Seoul to be selected as an excellent institution in the "2025 Climate Disaster Response Evaluation" hosted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. In June, at the Safety Korea Training site, Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong District. Provided by Seongdong District.

This evaluation was introduced for the first time this year after President Lee Jaemyung instructed at the Safety and Security Inspection Meeting in June to "significantly increase grant support for local governments that have reduced disasters and accidents." The system selects local governments that have responded effectively to natural disasters such as heatwaves and cold waves.

In November, Seongdong District presented at the best practices conference for top-performing local governments in the first round of evaluations, under the theme of "Systematic and Statistical Management of Urban Heatwave Response Measures Closely Tied to Daily Life." Recognized for its achievements in responding to summer heatwaves, Seongdong was the only district in Seoul to be selected.

The district quantified the implementation results of 29 heatwave response projects, centered on the "Comprehensive Heatwave Response Plan," and conducted weekly comparative analyses. Systematic management using statistics was employed to monitor the response situation.

To minimize heatwave damage in daily life, the district also strengthened the operation of heatwave mitigation facilities. The "Seongdong Book Maru," a 660-square-meter space on the first floor of the district office, was operated as a large-scale cooling shelter and was open 24 hours a day during heatwave warnings.

To protect vulnerable road users, the district operated 172 "cool shade canopies" at crosswalk waiting areas, 56 smart shelters, and 164 smart cooling and heating benches. By reflecting residents' opinions through text message complaints to the mayor and other channels, the district provided practical support, such as installing additional shade canopies. The number of water-spraying vehicles used to cool road surfaces was increased to ten, and four urban water playgrounds, including the Salgotyi Water Playground, were operated.

Mayor Jeong Won-oh stated, "Extreme weather events such as heatwaves are not merely meteorological issues but disasters that can threaten the daily lives of residents. We have made meticulous efforts to establish a seamless response system to create a safe Seongdong. Going forward, we will continue to take proactive disaster response measures to ensure the safety of our residents' daily lives, staying one step ahead of forecasts."
