Pyeongchang County in Gangwon Province has recently completed all contract procedures for each sector of the Cheongoksan Milky Way Mountain Tourism Hub construction project and will begin full-scale construction preparations starting next year.
The Cheongoksan Milky Way Mountain Tourism Hub project has completed all administrative procedures step by step, starting with the detailed design service in 2023, the designation of the site for the local garden in 2024, and the approval of the local garden development plan in 2025. With the signing of the construction contract in December this year, the project has established a solid foundation for full-scale implementation.
This project is a regional strategic initiative carried out in cooperation with Gangwon Province as part of the Gangwon Province Local Extinction Response Fund’s metropolitan account project, with a total investment of 15 billion won. In the Yukbaekmajigi area of Cheongoksan in Mitan-myeon, the project will establish an information center, a Milky Way observatory, and a wildflower theme garden to promote mountain tourism and address population decline at the same time. In particular, considering the winter weather and terrain conditions of the Cheongoksan area, construction will be suspended during the winter, and full-scale construction is scheduled to begin around April 2026.
Lee Juha, Head of the County Forestry Department, stated, "Now that all administrative procedures such as permits and approvals according to the scale of the project have been completed and the main construction contract has been signed, we will do our best to ensure the project proceeds without any setbacks," and added, "We ask for the active cooperation of local residents and visitors during the construction period."
