Arrest Warrants Issued Due to Concerns Over Destruction of Evidence
A man and woman in their 40s have been arrested and detained on charges of fatally assaulting their mother, who was in her 70s and lived with them.
On December 12, Park Chanseok, the presiding judge in charge of warrants at the Seoul Southern District Court, issued arrest warrants for the siblings after conducting a pretrial detention hearing on charges of causing death by assaulting a lineal ascendant.
Judge Park stated that the reasons for the arrest were concerns about destruction of evidence and the risk of flight.
The siblings were urgently taken into custody by the police on the afternoon of December 10 on suspicion of assaulting their mother, resulting in her death. Bruises were found on the deceased mother's face, arms, and other parts of her body, and based on the findings of the medical examiner, the police arrested the two.
During police questioning, the siblings admitted to the assault but claimed they did not expect their mother would die as a result.
When asked by reporters about the reason for the assault before the pretrial detention hearing, the son replied, "It was because of my poor cognitive abilities."
