The Ministry of National Defense will establish its own special investigation headquarters to continue the investigation into allegations of insurrection and treason related to the December 3 Martial Law, following the expiration of the investigation period for the special prosecutor team led by Cho Eunsuk (Insurrection Special Prosecutor).
At a regular briefing held at the Ministry of National Defense building in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on December 9, Deputy Spokesperson Lee Kyungho stated, "The investigation headquarters will be formed mainly around the Ministry of National Defense's prosecution team," adding, "We will announce the composition, including those responsible, once it is finalized."
The Insurrection Special Prosecutor's investigation period will end on December 14. The Ministry of National Defense's special investigation headquarters plans to investigate allegations that the special prosecutor team was unable to complete, as well as any additional suspicions that have been raised.
Meanwhile, the special investigation headquarters will be composed mainly of the Ministry of National Defense's prosecution team and military police from each branch of the armed forces. It is expected to continue investigations into incidents such as the infiltration of a North Korean drone into Pyongyang and allegations of illegal distribution of anti-North Korea leaflets.
