This event, hosted by the Korea Public Brand Promotion Agency and sponsored by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, is in its third year. It presents grand prizes in various categories by evaluating the contributions of local governments, public, and private institutions nationwide to the public good.
Namyangju City was recognized for its continuous efforts in implementing an integrated urban brand policy based on the philosophy of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, a historical and cultural asset, encompassing education, welfare, urban spaces, and citizen participation.
The city has positioned the 'Dasan Jeong Yak-yong Brand' as its core identity and has developed brand policies tailored to each stage of life. Notably, the city offers customized education programs by age group, such as the Jeong Yak-yong Childcare Curriculum, Yeo Yudang Citizen University, and Gongnyeom Hakdang. In addition, urban spaces have been designed to allow citizens to experience the brand firsthand, including the 'brand-themed station' at Dasan Station on Line 8 and the 'Jeong Yak-yong Garden' in Joan-myeon. In June, the city attracted attention by producing a new portrait and statue of Jeong Yak-yong based on scientific verification and physical measurements of his descendants.
Experts highly praised the city’s brand policy, noting that it is a practical approach rather than short-term image marketing.
One judge commented, "Namyangju City has successfully established its identity and representativeness as a public brand, providing a model that other local governments can benchmark."
The city plans to use this award as an opportunity to expand the influence of its brand nationwide. It is pursuing joint content development with Pohang City and Gangjin County, which were places of Jeong Yak-yong’s exile, and is also seeking a sisterhood relationship with the Navy’s next-generation Aegis destroyer, the Dasan Jeong Yak-yong.
Mayor Joo Kwangdeok stated, "Winning two awards is an official recognition of the systematic brand initiatives undertaken during the 8th popularly elected administration. As a city that practices the philosophy of Dasan, we will continue to implement policies that citizens can truly experience, aiming to become a leading city representing Korea’s brand power."
